Clearing dead timber from the forest

The fire fuel reduction crews are for young adults ages 18-27 that are interested in working in a high demand position that can lead to careers in the fire fighting field. Crew members must have current first aid and CPR training that will stay current through the entire season.

Crew members will be trained in chainsaw operation and wildfire behavior. All participants must be able to pass the red card training and physical test to be on the fire fuel reduction crews.

This is a hard job and demands physical strength and endurance. Work will be done on Forest Service land where there is a need for fire fuel reduction for the safety of the forest from fire, forest to urban interface to keep homes safe, and for wildlife habitat improvement.

Crews will consist of one crew leader and five crew members. Crews will work 10 day sessions followed by 4 days off. Camping on the job and cooking outdoors is also part of the reduction crews.

The experience, training and certification that crew members receive while participating on the fire fuel reduction crews is valuable education. The red card certification, (S130/190) could get a crew member a job in the fire fighting field working for the USFS, fire departments, or one of the many hotshot crews across the country.
